What are the risks?
As with any medical procedure, there are risks to each abortion procedure that every woman considering this option should be aware of. Your overall health is important and being informed about potential risks is one practical way you can guard your health and wellbeing.
Medical Abortion Risks
After taking the second pill of the medication abortion process, the short-term side effects a woman may experience are severe cramping, heavy bleeding, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fever, and dizziness.
Serious complications after a medical abortion include hemorrhage, or heavy bleeding, infection, and continued pregnancy with malformation to the embryo. As much as 5 percent of women require further treatment following the medication, typically a surgical procedure, to remove remaining uterine contents.
Surgical Abortion Risks
Following a surgical abortion procedure, the short-term side effects that may be experienced are sweating, nausea and/or vomiting, bleeding, blood clots, and feeling faint or dizzy.
The long-term risks a woman may experience include blood loss requiring a transfusion, incomplete abortion, infection and the formation of scar tissue, trauma to the cervix, or uterus perforation.

While women often report feeling relieved immediately following an abortion, over time many also feel negative emotions that they were not prepared for prior to the procedure.
